Vaccinations and vaccinations of Siberian Huskies

Hello, I purchased a 2-month-old Siberian Husky puppy. A number of questions arose:
  1. They told me to give him an anthelmintic a week before the first vaccination; worms were found in the feces. Should I do it again or am I allowed to take it for vaccination?
  2. If the answer is yes, how many days later should I vaccinate?
  3. What vaccinations are needed? They said to do one, and after 3 weeks - a second. Please explain what kind of vaccinations are they? I would like to ask the veterinarian what is being done for my pet.
  4. There is an adult dog living in the house. Should I give anthelmintic? They gave it three weeks ago before the scheduled vaccination.

Answer

Huskies need vaccinations. Siberian dogs have good health, but there is a risk of contracting an infection. Vaccination protects the animal from disease and helps to form a strong immune system.

It is worth understanding why vaccinations are needed. The vaccine is a multiply weakened virus injected individually into the dog. After the injection, the animal expects a mild form of illness; as a result, the body produces antibodies to the infection. Bodies are preserved in the blood from a year until the end of life.

If the injection is given to a sick dog, it is possible to aggravate the course of the disease; before taking the drug, the animal is shown to a veterinarian.

Sometimes allergic reactions occur. Symptoms are mild - redness of the injection area. Sometimes there are serious consequences, for example, anaphylactic shock. Such a turn of events cannot be ruled out. If this happens, the animal will need emergency veterinary care. Anaphylactic shock is manifested by shortness of breath, the mucous membrane turns blue, and salivation is present. The dog is given antihistamines and a veterinarian is called.

After vaccination, the husky may get sick. Refuses food and walks. Don't be afraid, the behavior is natural and will go away soon.

Today the market is filled with vaccination drugs, it’s worth understanding so as not to get confused. There are two types of vaccinations for dogs:

  • The first type, mono-vaccines, help build immunity to fight a single disease.
  • The second is complex vaccines that protect the body from a number of diseases. The species is divided into dead and living. Dead vaccines are made from dead bacteria and do not cause disease. Living ones are saturated with living, weakened microorganisms, after which a mild form of the disease may appear.

To find out which type of husky is suitable, contact an experienced veterinarian.

Is it necessary to vaccinate Huskies?

Vaccination of a dog is a mandatory procedure aimed at developing a stable resistance of the husky’s body to deadly paraviruses, enteritis, leptospirosis, rabies, and plague. Timely vaccinations for puppies allow the dog to develop permanent immunity for a period of one year or more. Some vaccinations require annual repetition, for example against rabies.

A detailed vaccination schedule should be found in a veterinary clinic, where specialists select the type of vaccine depending on the physical condition of the pet. The market offers vaccines containing one virus - they are called mono-vaccines; several - complex or polyvalent. Among the latter are:

  • killed. They consist of inactive microorganisms that do not cause disease in the dog. They form medium-resistant immunity;
  • alive. They contain weakened viruses of certain diseases, which, after entering the puppy’s body, contribute to its infection. The disease passes easily, and the animal develops antibodies to specific viruses and develops high resistance to them.

Vaccinations of dogs with polyvalent vaccines are carried out three times, with an intermediate period of two to three weeks. At the same time, the condition of the puppy is assessed, which may refuse food and walks for some time, be capricious and show character.

Huskies are vaccinated with proven vaccines, the manufacturers of which have proven themselves in this field. The drugs Boostervac and Nobivak are considered popular.

When is the best time for Huskies to be vaccinated?

Don't rush into vaccination. If the mother is vaccinated on time, the antibodies are passed on to the puppies. Then the vaccination should be postponed; at an early age there will be no benefit, maternal antibodies will kill the bacteria.

Maternal protection disappears at one and a half months of age, during which time the puppy is vaccinated. If the mother has not received the serum, the best age for preventive measures is considered to be 1.5 months, but veterinarians advise carrying out the procedure within a month and repeating the procedure at two months.

Which method is better is up to the owner to decide; both methods work. It is worth remembering about quarantine. The puppy should not have contact with the outside world for two weeks. The body is weakened, it needs to be protected from viruses, immunity after the injection will be restored on the fourteenth day.

Let's talk about vaccines

I advise you to start getting acquainted with vaccination by analyzing what types of vaccines there are:

  • Mono - I think it’s easy to guess that such a drug fights any one ailment.
  • Complex - it is interesting that just one such vaccination can protect a dog from several of the most common and dangerous diseases. For example, from rabies, canine distemper, rhinotracheitis, adenoviral hepatitis, parvovirus enteritis, leptospirosis.
  • Killed - created from completely neutralized microorganisms. They do not cause illness even in a mild form, so they are excellent for Huskies with poor health. However, I cannot help but mention a significant disadvantage of such a vaccination - the husky develops resistance to diseases, but it is not strong.
  • Alive - but thanks to them the pet is better protected. Microorganisms are alive, but greatly weakened. Therefore, the infection is mild but not dangerous. In the first period after vaccination, a husky may experience reactions such as lack of appetite, lethargy, and even a reluctance to take a walk! However, after a few days the husky will be mobile again and, most importantly, healthier.

How to properly vaccinate a Husky

Before vaccination, the puppy is prepared for the process. Two weeks before vaccinations, deworming is performed. After the injection, the body should not be loaded; it is better to give the animal the right to choose, let it do what it wants. If the last vaccination occurred in the winter, it is worth rescheduling the vaccination until the spring. In winter, the dog’s body is weakened and the immune system is not protected. Vaccination may harm the puppy.

It is important to remember that the serum is stored in the refrigerator, otherwise the vaccine will deteriorate, will not be beneficial in the future and can cause harm. When purchasing a drug, the owner must ensure proper storage. Be sure to look at the expiration date indicated on the ampoule or packaging. The quality of the vaccine may be affected by a slight violation of the serum storage conditions.

Regarding the vaccination process. It is acceptable to inject the owner yourself. The injection is injected into the femoral part of the hind legs or into the withers.

Veterinarians recommend vaccinating huskies at the withers. At home, the animal is pinched between the legs, immobilizing it. Afterwards the skin on the withers is pulled back and the drug is injected. If the owner is unable to vaccinate the animal, it is better to consult a doctor.

At what age can vaccinations be given?

The first vaccinations for Husky puppies are best done at 8–9 weeks. Repeated vaccination is done after a month, then after 1 year.

Important! Puppies are vaccinated only if they have already been weaned from their mother. Mother's milk neutralizes the vaccine, so the baby's body simply will not develop a protective reaction.

It is not recommended to vaccinate your Husky during the period when baby molars are changing. Firstly, in this case, weak immunity is developed. Secondly, there is a possibility of darkening of the enamel.

Huskies are vaccinated against rabies from 6 months to 1 year.

Contraindications

A husky puppy should not be vaccinated if:

  • the baby does not eat or eats very little;
  • there is a drop in activity;
  • increased gas formation, vomiting or diarrhea appear;
  • there is purulent discharge on the mucous membrane or in the ear canals;
  • increased temperature;
  • there are injuries or the animal has suffered severe stress;
  • the baby drinks a lot;
  • there are neoplasms;
  • have ulcers, eczema or rashes.
  • Important! A husky baby is vaccinated only after diagnosis and full treatment.

    How to prepare a puppy for vaccination

    Mandatory rules contribute to the successful completion of vaccination. These include:

    • deworming of the dog, which is carried out 10 - 14 before the vaccination;
    • visual examination of the puppy confirming its absolute health;
    • proper rest for the dog the day before, no water procedures.

    The injection is administered strictly on an empty stomach.

    Dog owners should pay special attention to the storage conditions of the vaccine and its expiration date. The drugs can retain their properties only at refrigerated temperatures. Therefore, the ampoule brought by the pharmacist should be cool to the touch.

    Vaccinations are done in compliance with the rules of antiseptics and asepsis. Before starting, the surface of the ampoule and the injection site are disinfected.

    The injection of the Siberian Husky is made with a disposable syringe at the withers, after first holding the puppy between the legs and pulling back the skin. The drug can also be injected into the thigh of the hind paw.

    Vaccinated pets are at risk of contracting viral diseases. This happens when using an expired drug, when introducing a vaccine to a weakened or old pet, when active immunity is neutralized by passive immunity, when the animal’s metabolism is impaired, which leads to immune deficiency.

    Vaccination schedule

    Dog owners need to clearly know what vaccinations their Huskies receive and the timing of them. Vaccine manufacturers offer a classic scheme of recommended vaccinations, which can be adjusted by a veterinarian depending on the circumstances and individual developmental characteristics of pets.

    AgeVaccinations
    1.5 monthshepatitis, enteritis, adenovirosis
    2 monthshepatitis, enteritis, adenovirosis, plague
    2.5 monthshepatitis, enteritis, adenovirosis, plague (repeat of previous vaccination)
    3 months (repeat once a year)rabies
    6 months (after teeth change)hepatitis, enteritis, adenovirosis, plague
    6.5 months (repeat once a year)hepatitis, enteritis, adenovirosis, plague (repeat of previous vaccination)

    Socialize your Husky before vaccinations

    1. Introduce your new puppy to friends so that they become accustomed to new people and are comfortable and confident at a young age.
    2. Before your Husky puppies get their shots, keep them local in public areas and in the general area of veterinary services.
    3. Bring water, treats, and a blanket to keep your husky comfortable.

    Vaccination of dogs, not just huskies, is an extremely important activity, and it is the responsibility to regularly carry out certain vaccinations, such as against rabies, as required by law. There is a fine for failure to comply. It should also be remembered that the veterinarian should plan the husky vaccination plan, since he has modern knowledge about the danger that awaits the puppy in a certain area, city, or village.

    Huskies are distinguished by excellent natural health, hardy, and ready for constant stress. However, when living in a city or town, in contact with other animals, there is a risk of the dog becoming infected with serious diseases. What preventative measures should a husky owner take to protect his pet from infections?

    Dates of first vaccination

    The highest percentage of plague and enteritis infections in puppies occurs from two months to one year. Therefore, veterinary experts recommend the first vaccination for huskies at the age of 8-9 weeks, provided they are weaned by this period. The vaccine is used again after a month and a year.

    During the change of baby teeth, experts do not recommend vaccinations for two reasons. Firstly, there is a risk of developing weak immunity, and secondly, tooth enamel darkens.

    The first vaccination against rabies in prosperous regions is carried out from six months to a year, and in disadvantaged regions - at 3 months.

    Note! Maternal antibodies contained in milk neutralize vaccine strains of pathogens and prevent the development of stable immunity. Therefore, it is not advisable to vaccinate offspring before six weeks of age.
