Vaccination is recommended for all individuals and, above all, for those who are at increased risk of contracting influenza, especially if influenza is added to existing diseases:
- Young children (under 1 year old)
- Children attending kindergarten, school, sports and children's sections, clubs.
- Adults over 65 years of age.
- People with chronic respiratory diseases, including bronchial asthma, renal failure, hemoglobinopathies and immunodeficiency conditions.
- Patients with cardiovascular diseases.
- Patients with chronic renal failure.
- Patients with chronic metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus.
- Children and adults with immunodeficiency conditions, patients receiving immunosuppressants, cytostatics, radiation therapy or high doses of corticosteroids.
- Children and adolescents from 6 months. under 18 years of age who have been receiving medications containing acetylsalicylic acid for a long time and are therefore at increased risk of developing Reye's syndrome due to influenza infection.
- Medical personnel, teachers, doctors, public transport drivers: all those who come into contact with large numbers of people every day, as well as members of their families.
ULTRIX QUADRI (Fort, Russia)
It is a vaccine against all four circulating seasonal influenza virus strains. The composition includes inactivated influenza viruses split into individual small antigens. Ultrix Quadri does not contain adjuvants, since the concentration of viral antigens in the drug is sufficient to form an immune response.
Intended for vaccination of children from 6 years of age and adults up to 60 years of age. Not yet approved for older ages.

Contraindications

Vaxigrip is contraindicated if you have a history of an allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine.

Composition and release form of the Influvac vaccine
This drug is sold in the form of a suspension, which is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. The Influvac vaccine is sold in syringes, which should be disposed of after the injection. The medicine also comes with needles.
The composition of this vaccine is as follows:
— Hemagglutinin and neuraminidase of viral strains of types: A(H3N2), A(H1N1), B.

Active substance
All flu vaccines from all manufacturers contain strains of influenza viruses that are relevant for the coming season. Most contain antigens from three of the four expected strains. Such vaccines are called trivalent. But recently, vaccines containing antigens of all four strains have become increasingly important, which provides more complete protection.
Auxiliary components
The fewer components there are in the influenza vaccine, the less likely there are any reactions to the vaccine. Some components simply cannot be done without. For example, emulsifiers in a number of vaccines ensure the homogeneity of the solution, which in turn ensures the effectiveness and low reactogenicity of the vaccine. But adjuvants (substances that enhance the immune response) in influenza vaccines are not a mandatory component; a high concentration of antigen is sufficient.
Individual intolerance
If in previous seasons, when you were vaccinated, you developed an anaphylactic reaction to a vaccine, then you should avoid using the same vaccine and choose other flu vaccines with a different composition for vaccination. If you know which component the reaction has developed to, then try to choose a vaccine that does not contain this component.
An allergy to chicken egg white is not a contraindication for flu vaccination.
Age restrictions
The volume of the vaccine dose, as well as the composition, depends on age. Adults require a larger dose than children, and some components that are acceptable in vaccines for adults are not used in vaccines for children. Some vaccines available for adults may not yet be approved for use in children, or vice versa for people over a certain age. Age restrictions may narrow your choices.
Availability
It is recommended to get vaccinated against influenza before the start of the epidemic season, which usually begins in the second half of autumn. Over the past few years, imported flu vaccines have appeared in our country very late, closer to mid-November, but many were still waiting for them. This year there may be no supplies to Russia at all, which means we need to decide which of the domestic vaccines can be made.
Based on the criteria described above, the UltrixQuadri vaccine is best suited for vaccinating adults under 60 years of age and children over the age of 6 years. This is a quadrivalent vaccine with a high antigen content.
In second place is the Ultrix vaccine (not Quadri). This is a trivalent vaccine with a high antigen content. It has the widest age range of use (from 6 months) with no upper limit. So this is an option for people over 60 years of age.
In third place is a new product from last season - the Flu-M vaccine. This is also a trivalent vaccine with a high content of antigens, but with age restrictions from 18 to 60 years.

Flu vaccination for pregnant women and other risk groups
It is especially undesirable for children of preschool and school age, pregnant women, the elderly, people with a weakened immune system and chronic diseases of the heart and lungs, central nervous system, and diabetes to get sick. In these people, the flu can be extremely severe, with complications and a high probability of death. That is why they are vaccinated first. It is also important for their relatives and immediate circle to be vaccinated to reduce the risk of infection within the family. Available data on the use of the Vaxigrip in pregnant women do not indicate the possibility of negative effects of vaccination on the fetus and the woman’s body. Vaccination with Vaxigrip can be carried out starting from the second trimester of pregnancy.
It is also important to consider that some people, due to their profession or lifestyle, are much more likely to encounter the influenza virus than others. These are transport, catering, trade employees, doctors, students, military personnel, and police.
Separately, it should be mentioned that, having contracted the flu, these people will become a source of infection for a large number of others around them, including their family! Therefore, they themselves and their relatives must be vaccinated.
Vaccination with Sovigrip and Grippol
In addition to those listed above, three more domestic influenza vaccines are available in Russia - Grippol Plus (Petrovax Pharm) and Sovigripp (Microgen). Both vaccines are trivalent. One quadrivalent vaccine, Grippol Quadrivalent (Petrovax), is also available. All these vaccines are distinguished by the presence of an adjuvant in their composition. Vaccines intended for use in children may also contain a preservative. The adjuvants used in these vaccines are not used anywhere else in the world; therefore, the evidence base for them is limited only to domestic publications, which raises concerns about their effectiveness and safety. Both adjuvant and preservative can become an additional source of allergic reactions.
These vaccines are also characterized by a poorer variety of antigens, since they include only the surface proteins of the influenza virus, in contrast to the vaccines listed above, which also include internal antigens.
Vaccination with imported vaccines Vaxigrip®, Influvac®
At the moment, Vaxigrip® is the only European vaccine available, due to the coronavirus epidemic and the resulting closed borders. And also in connection with the new rules for labeling medicines that came into force on July 1, 2020. According to the information we have, the Abbott company (Netherlands) does not plan to supply Influvac to Russia this year. They do not comment on the reason, but experts attribute this specifically to the need to undergo additional labeling of the drug.
