Please check with the clinic administrators for availability of vaccines.

The BiVac polio vaccine is intended for active immunization of children and adults against polio. The polio virus causes a disease that is characterized by damage to the central nervous system and manifests itself in the formation of persistent disorders of motor function (paresis, paralysis, muscle atrophy). The live vaccine contains attenuated (i.e. special weakened) strains of polio virus types 1 and 3. Poliovirus type 2 has been declared eradicated from the planet since 2015 thanks to worldwide vaccination.

Indications for use

  • Healthy children - for prophylactic administration to prevent infection and development of polio types 1 and 3
  • Children and adults - for revaccination (extension of effectiveness) against polio types 1 and 3
  • Children and adults - for administration according to epidemiological indications

Since polio can occur in an erased form and gradually lead to complications, specialists at the Miracle Doctor clinic recommend vaccination against polio to everyone who cares about the health of their children.

Polio vaccination scheme with BiVac Polio

The BiVac Polio vaccine is oral, i.e.
is administered into the patient’s mouth in the form of a solution (drops in the mouth). According to the standard immunization schedule, the vaccine must be administered in three doses. The first two doses, regardless of the age at which immunization was initiated, should be received by the patient using inactivated polio vaccine. The third vaccination and subsequent revaccinations, which are carried out three times, are performed with inactivated or live vaccines in accordance with the National Vaccination Calendar of the Russian Federation. In Russia, children under one year of age are vaccinated at 3, 4.5 and 6 months, followed by revaccination at 18 and 20 months and 14 years. If the immunization plan is violated, the pediatrician prescribes an individual regimen, as well as decides on the possibility of simultaneous administration of several drugs or the need for revaccination. For consultation with specialists, you must bring information about vaccinations and tests performed.

Only a doctor can decide whether BiVac Polio is suitable for vaccination

BiVac Polio is contraindicated if you have a history of an allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine.

BiVac Polio vaccination is contraindicated in the following cases:

  1. Neurological disorders accompanying previous vaccination with oral polio vaccine.
  2. Immunodeficiency state, malignant neoplasms, immunosuppression (vaccinations are carried out no earlier than 3 months after the end of the course of therapy).
  3. Pregnancy.
  4. Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine.
  5. Severe reaction (temperature above 40 °C) or complication to a previous drug administration.

Oral polio vaccine (OPV)

Vaccination with OPV (oral polio vaccine BiVvac Polio)500 rub.

Poliomyelitis is a viral infection that primarily affects the central nervous system (gray matter of the spinal cord) and leads to the development of flaccid paresis and paralysis.
OPV vaccination is intended to be used to prevent the incidence of polio. Otherwise it is referred to as infantile spinal paralysis.

The disease is characterized by a high level of danger, especially for young children. Poliomyelitis, which affects a child’s body during its formation, leads to a large number of different deviations from the norm. All of them have irreversible consequences.

What is OPV vaccine?

On Russian territory today, only one drug used orally has received permission for use. This is “Oral polio vaccine types 1, 2, 3 (OPV).” It is based on the live polio virus. It has three serotypes overlapping wild viral strains. Other components of the drug also include antibiotics that prevent bacterial growth in the nutrient medium.

If a child is allergic to medications in this group, it is necessary to tell the doctor which ones. The vaccination schedule includes both an inactivated vaccine (IPV) and its alternative version with a live virus. Vaccination using the first is done by injection. And OPV is administered orally.

An inactivated drug is indicated for babies in the first year of life. For example, doctors recommend Imovax Polio or Poliorix. Next, they move on to three doses of the drug with the live virus. Repeated vaccination is carried out with OPV.

In accordance with the instructional materials, the OPV vaccine is recommended for children aged 3 months to 14 years. In areas with identified infectious foci, the drug is administered immediately after birth. Adults are vaccinated when visiting areas unfavorable for polio.

Where is OPV vaccination given?

OPV for polio comes as a pink liquid that comes in 5 ml vials that hold 25 doses. The value of each is equivalent to 4 drops of the drug. The required amount of vaccine is selected with a special pipette. Sometimes it is replaced by a syringe. OPV is dripped into the root of the tongue for infants.

For older children - on the palatine tonsils. The main thing is not to provoke excessive salivation during the vaccination process. Regurgitation and vomiting are undesirable. If such reactions could not be avoided, repeated administration of the vaccine is allowed.

The polio virus must attach to the oral mucosa. Then it spreads to the tonsils and ends up in the intestines, where it begins to reproduce, forming immunity. If vomiting and salivation occur, viral fixation does not occur, and the vaccination is considered ineffective.

When OPV enters the stomach, hydrochloric acid attacks the virus and neutralizes it. In such a situation, it is also impossible to talk about the effectiveness of vaccination. If the second attempt to get vaccinated is also unsuccessful, it is not given a third time.

OPV combines well with other vaccines. The drug cannot be combined only with BCG and vaccinations with oral administration. It does not interfere with the formation of immunity to other diseases.

Contraindications

The polio vaccine is not indicated if:

  • Immunodeficiency is noted, HIV or oncological pathology is diagnosed;
  • The child is surrounded by people with weak immune systems, or there are pregnant women nearby;
  • Neurological complications were observed during the previous vaccination;
  • There are gastrointestinal diseases.

In the latter case, vaccination is allowed under strict medical supervision.

Vaccination is carried out against the background of the absence of elevated body temperature and colds. It is possible for a vaccinated child to infect people who are not immune to polio.

This circumstance requires compliance with the following rules:

  • If there are unvaccinated children under one year of age in the family or who have a medical exemption from vaccination, IPV must be used;
  • Children who are not vaccinated with OPV should be isolated from others when the vaccination campaign is carried out en masse for 2-4 weeks.

It is advisable to use IPV in certain periods in orphanages, boarding schools, hospitals and anti-tuberculosis sanatoriums.

Vaccination dates

The vaccination is done according to the approved scheme:

  • From 3 months of life to 4.5 months of age, children are vaccinated by injection of IPV;
  • OPV is administered at six months;
  • After 18 months, they are revaccinated with a drug containing a live virus;
  • Repeated revaccination with OPV is performed after 20 months;
  • The third time this vaccination drug is used is at the age of 14.

The patient can choose an inactivated vaccine. However, you must purchase it yourself.

How to prepare for OPV vaccination?

The oral polio vaccine requires preliminary preparation of the person before it is administered. The child is examined by a pediatrician.

He makes a prediction regarding possible infection of family members if OPV is planned for vaccination.

Before and after administration of the drug, it is not recommended to eat or drink for 1 hour.

Reaction to OPV vaccine

The body's response to the vaccination does not show any signs of expression. The vaccine is easily tolerated by children. After its introduction, walking, swimming, etc. are not prohibited. The child lives according to the usual schedule.

Rarely occurring side effects from the use of OPV are expressed in stool disturbances that last several days after vaccination. You do not need to take any action to eliminate it. The stool returns to normal. Allergic reactions resembling skin rash, nausea, and vomiting may occur.

Today in Russia there is an intention to switch to the use of inactivated drugs for vaccination against polio, but only if the epidemiological situation regarding it stabilizes. Measures aimed at eradicating the infection are still relevant.

Periodic outbreaks of the disease force them to be carried out on a regular basis. Vaccination has been recognized as an effective method of combating poliovirus, for which medicine has not yet found an alternative.

Benefits of vaccination against polio at the Miracle Doctor clinic
